Chapter 20: The Heavens Display Their Might
A Type 95 automatic rifle, in Gu Jianfeng’s hands, seemed as if it were equipped with a tracking device—it hit wherever he aimed, never missing a shot. Every criminal who dared to raise their head was met with a bullet from Gu Jianfeng’s gun. His entire movement was fluid and unbroken, not a moment’s hesitation.
“Go, hurry, hold your ground!” The tone of Bie Jingye’s voice betrayed a trace of panic. Just moments before, he had carried the air of a leader commanding the battlefield, but that image vanished in an instant. In the face of death, everyone was equal.
“Boss, as long as we live, there’ll always be hope. Let’s retreat for now,” Ge Junxiong whispered quietly into Bie Jingye’s ear. The situation before them was clearly lost; staying here would serve Bie Jingye no good. He knew full well the gravity of his actions—if he was captured by the special police, even the lightest sentence would mean life imprisonment.
“Brothers, don’t panic! There are more of us than them!” Bie Jingye called out. “Here’s what I’ll do—I’ll go ahead and scout the path. I’ll be back shortly!” With those words, he took Ge Junxiong with him and slipped away.
Heavenly General, seeing Bie Jingye attempting to escape, quickly followed in secret, waiting for the right moment to strike.
The criminals, already lacking the will to fight, now realized they had been abandoned when Bie Jingye failed to return. They knew they had been left behind.
“It’s a ghost!” One man, seeing Gu Jianfeng’s terrifying, god-of-war presence, could no longer hold his nerves. He threw his gun aside in fright and bolted toward the border. With the first to flee, others quickly followed, and within moments, the remaining twenty or so began to scatter in all directions.
“After them!” Cheng Anfu, seeing the chaos, immediately issued the command. The special police, who had been stunned into silence by Gu Jianfeng and Long Fei’s prowess, quickly snapped to attention.
The officer who had earlier mocked the company now pulled his cap down tightly over his head, afraid that anyone might see his blushing face. He realized at last the folly of showing off before true masters.
No longer bothered by the minor criminals, Gu Jianfeng scanned his surroundings, searching for Heavenly General’s whereabouts.
Finally, several hundred meters away, Gu Jianfeng spotted Bie Jingye’s figure, stumbling in panic, both comical and pitiable. Fearing for Heavenly General’s safety, Gu Jianfeng signaled to Long Fei in the distance and set off in pursuit of Bie Jingye.
Though he had not seen Heavenly General, Gu Jianfeng was certain he would be nearby.
“Boss, those two dogs behind us are relentless! We can’t seem to shake them off!” Ge Junxiong gasped between breaths.
Bie Jingye knew that if it weren’t for their guns, those dogs would have caught up to them long ago.
“They must be police dogs. We need to find a way to deal with them, otherwise we won’t get far,” Bie Jingye said grimly.
Ge Junxiong had plenty of tricks when it came to dealing with people, but when it came to dogs, he found himself at a loss.
“Boss, the grass is thick and the forest dense here. Finding those two dogs and taking them out won’t be easy. Luckily, they’re still wary of our guns—for now, at least, they won’t dare approach us,” Ge Junxiong replied.
In truth, his mind was full of thoughts of escape. With Bie Jingye’s downfall imminent, staying behind would be foolish.
“You’re right. Let’s keep moving!” Bie Jingye nodded, urgency in his voice.
“Boss, you go ahead. I’ll cover the rear. I refuse to believe I can’t handle those two mutts!” Ge Junxiong pretended to be gallant.
“If so, thank you, brother. I’ll be sure to reward you one day!” Bie Jingye said, rushing off without a backward glance.
“Heh, when disaster strikes, everyone flies solo. May you find your own luck,” Ge Junxiong muttered, running off in the opposite direction.
“Woof…” “Woof…” Heavenly General and Rifle ignored Ge Junxiong, heading straight for Bie Jingye.
“Damn, why are these two beasts chasing after me?” Bie Jingye cursed, plunging into any path he could find, ignoring the thorny branches that tore at his clothes.
The bullets in his pistol were quickly spent in his frantic escape, and Bie Jingye, already fearful, was now utterly terrified. The primal fear humans hold for wild beasts was etched deep within him.
Seeing the ferocity in Heavenly General and Rifle, Bie Jingye lost all composure.
“Ah!” His legs weak, Bie Jingye stumbled over a small branch and fell hard to the ground, his sausage-like lips pressing fervently against the earth.
Heavenly General, seeing his plight, accelerated and reached Bie Jingye’s side, but did not pounce—he simply glared menacingly.
Bie Jingye rolled over and saw two pairs of glowing green eyes fixed on him. An unpleasant-smelling liquid began to seep from his body.
“Don’t… don’t come any closer!” Bie Jingye stammered, grabbing a dry stick beside him.
“Woof!” Heavenly General barked a warning.
Seeing that the dogs had no intention of harming him, Bie Jingye’s courage slowly returned. He stood carefully, hoping to escape again.
“Woof woof woof!” Sensing Bie Jingye’s movement, Heavenly General barked furiously and dashed ahead, blocking his path.
Heavenly General and Rifle surrounded Bie Jingye front and back, leaving him trapped.
After so long on the mountain path, Bie Jingye’s stamina was nearly depleted. Even at his best, he would never dare face Heavenly General in a bare-handed fight—the sheer size of the dog was intimidating enough, let alone now.
Before long, Gu Jianfeng finally arrived.
“Woof woof…” “Woof woof…” Heavenly General and Rifle wagged their tails excitedly upon seeing Gu Jianfeng, as if presenting a prize.
Seeing his dogs safe and sound, Gu Jianfeng let out a relieved breath, stroking their heads and showering them with praise. Though he had great faith in Heavenly General and Rifle, the danger was real—Bie Jingye had been armed.
“What’s your name?” Gu Jianfeng glanced at Bie Jingye, asking in a calm voice.
“Bie… Bie Jingye!” Feeling the murderous gaze in Gu Jianfeng’s eyes, Bie Jingye shivered uncontrollably. This was a soldier who had seen blood; an ordinary man could never imitate such a look.
“Stay here quietly. Don’t try anything stupid. Or else, don’t blame me for being ruthless,” Gu Jianfeng said sternly.
“I will, I will!” For reasons unknown, after seeing Gu Jianfeng, Bie Jingye suddenly relaxed. No matter what, his life had been spared.
