Volume One, Chapter 14: Retribution Arrives
Su Tong’s smile faded as she gazed at Shen Xianglan for a moment, then suddenly spoke.
“Madam Su, you have accumulated much bad karma with your words. Retribution will come swiftly.”
Shen Xianglan was enraged at this. “What do you mean by that? I raised you for eighteen years, and you dare to curse me?”
Then, as if she’d caught Su Tong in a moment of weakness, she turned to Xiao Shiyu beside her.
“President Xiao, see? Now you know why I had to drive her out of the Su family.
She’s malicious at heart, an ungrateful wretch—how could you possibly want to keep her?
She only has her looks; her heart is black as coal.”
“Madam Su!”
Xiao Shiyu suddenly barked, his face dark with displeasure.
Shen Xianglan, who had meant to continue her tirade, paused at his interruption.
Xiao Shiyu continued, “I know exactly what kind of person Su Tong is. But do you truly understand her?”
Su Tong was gentle and kind, and her skill in divination and talisman-making was unparalleled.
Yet Shen Xianglan, as her foster mother, seemed oblivious, choosing only to disparage her.
How much neglect, how much dislike must there be?
What kind of days did Su Tong live in the Su household?
Thinking on this, Xiao Shiyu regretted not meeting Su Tong sooner—sooner, so he could have rescued her from that suffocating home.
Su Tong suddenly sensed something odd in Xiao Shiyu’s gaze—a deep sympathy and pity, and even… guilt?
That was Shen Xianglan’s issue; why should he feel guilty?
To prevent him from dwelling further, Su Tong hurriedly urged Shen Xianglan, “Madam Su, please leave now.”
Better to keep her distance, lest retribution catch them in its wake.
“I don't need you to tell me, I was going anyway. Seeing you irritates me.”
Shen Xianglan snorted coldly and strode toward the parking lot in her heels.
But as she rounded a corner, her foot slipped and she crashed into a nearby railing.
There was a sharp protrusion on the railing that sliced her mouth open.
Blood streamed down at once.
Shen Xianglan screamed in pain, accidentally tugging her wounded mouth, which hurt even more.
She could only cover her mouth with her hand, whimpering softly.
Su Tong approached and shook her head with a sigh. “Madam Su, those who commit sins with their words invite retribution not only upon themselves, but also upon their children.”
At present, Su Xi was the most unfortunate in the Su family.
No sooner had Su Tong finished speaking than, in a luxury ward of a private hospital downtown—
Su Xi was about to strike her fifth nurse.
Suddenly, her foot slipped.
With a crack of breaking bone, she fell hard to the floor, howling in pain.
At the same time, Su Tong’s merit points increased again.
Merit: -9992.5
Su Tong curled her lips—earning merit from Su Xi was always more satisfying, with no middleman taking a cut.
Shen Xianglan’s eyes were red with anger, glaring at Su Tong as if she wished to kill her.
She forced herself to curse even through the pain.
“Su Tong, you wretched girl, you’re a jinx! You curse not only me, but my child as well. You deserve to die!”
Upon hearing this, Xiao Shiyu was furious enough to want to kick Shen Xianglan, but seeing Su Tong’s calm face, he restrained himself.
“Aren’t you angry?”
“Of course I am. But anger doesn’t always need to be shown on the face.”
Su Tong pointed at Shen Xianglan. “Look at her—she’s furious, and she’s vented her anger, but her mouth wound is worse now. Even twenty stitches might not close it; she’s only hurting herself.”
She didn’t show her anger outwardly, but her actions would let them know she was angry—and that the consequences were severe.
Just now, she had quietly strengthened the backlash spell on her red bracelet.
The Su family’s malice toward her would ultimately rebound upon themselves.
The Su family’s misfortunes would only multiply in the future.
Xiao Shiyu wanted to treat Su Tong to dinner, asking her to choose the place.
But Su Tong said she had never eaten out before and didn’t know where to go, asking Xiao Shiyu to decide.
This made Xiao Shiyu feel a renewed surge of pity and tenderness.
He immediately chose a place with a wide variety of dishes and a unique atmosphere.
Su Tong was very satisfied, eating with genuine delight.
After dinner, Xiao Shiyu drove Su Tong back to Haihe Cloud Residence.
Just as they reached the entrance, Xiao Shiyu’s phone rang.
He answered, “Shiwei, is the competition over already?”
Xiao Shiwei’s cheerful voice came through, “It’s finished—we came in first! I’ll be home soon.”
Su Tong saw Xiao Shiyu on the phone and waved to him as she got out of the car.
Xiao Shiyu hurriedly ended the call and got out as well.
He said to Su Tong, “My sister Xiao Shiwei is coming home this afternoon. She’s lively and easy to get along with, so you don’t need to feel any pressure.”
“All right.”
Su Tong had known from the beginning that the Xiao family was large, so she was mentally prepared.
If things went well, she’d stay until September 1st when school started. If not, she’d move out.
Watching Su Tong enter the villa, Xiao Shiyu called Xiao Shiwei again, telling her about Su Tong’s situation so she’d be prepared.
Then he drove to the office.
In the past two days since her rebirth, Su Tong had been busy nonstop.
Fortunately, she now had a place to stay, some savings, and today she had finally severed ties with the Su family. She could at last make time to cultivate.
After her spiritual power completed another cycle within her body, there was a knock at the door.
Su Tong rose and opened it.
A face similar to Xiao Shiyu’s by seven parts appeared before her.
It was Xiao Shiwei.
Her short hair was neat and sharp, and she wore loose sportswear, radiating energy.
Xiao Shiwei studied Su Tong carefully.
Her skin was fair, her features pure and lovely, yet her simple shorts and tee gave her an ethereal, distinctive air.
Especially those eyes—clear and bright, as if they could see straight into a person’s soul.
Xiao Shiwei was momentarily stunned, but quickly recovered, her brows smiling and her tone lively.
“You must be Su Tong, the fortune-teller my brother mentioned? You look so young! I’m Xiao Shiwei, nice to meet you.”
She extended her hand.
Su Tong shook her hand briefly. “Nice to meet you.”
“May I come in and sit for a while?”
Xiao Shiwei’s tone was pleasant, her smile infectious.
Su Tong stepped aside and gestured invitingly.
“Of course, come in.”
Su Tong’s room was spacious, with a set of solid wood sofas near the balcony.
Xiao Shiwei walked over and sat, her eyes fixed intently on Su Tong.
Su Tong ignored her fervent gaze and poured her a cup of tea.
“Is there something you need?”
Xiao Shiwei leaned forward, curiosity in her voice.
“Do you really know how to tell fortunes?”
Su Tong took a sip of tea and nodded. “Yes. Would you like a reading? Two thousand per session.”
Xiao Shiwei didn’t answer, instead asking, “Do you know what the topic was for my debate competition this time?”
Su Tong shook her head. “No.”
She could have divined it if she wanted.
But clearly, Xiao Shiwei didn’t intend for her to do that and said directly, “The topic was ‘The End of Science Is Metaphysics.’ Our team was on the opposing side, and in the end, we won.”
