Nurses and doctors quickly arrived. Fu Yancheng explained the situation rapidly and clearly, anxiety evident in his tone. "She just started vomiting suddenly. Her emotions were very agitated earlier."

"Please conduct a thorough examination immediately!"

The doctor soothed him, "Don't worry, we'll begin with some basic tests. It could be a stress response, or perhaps something else." As he spoke, he began checking Qiao Xi's blood pressure and heart rate.

Fu Yancheng pressed his lips together tightly, standing nearby, his gaze never leaving Qiao Xi's pale face for a single second.

Seeing her brow furrowed in discomfort made his heart clench. He regretted having teased her moments before, failing to notice her discomfort sooner.

Between tests, Qiao Xi managed to regain a bit of strength. She opened her eyes weakly, meeting Fu Yancheng's anxious, pained gaze.

She wanted to reassure him that she was all right, but was interrupted by another bout of dry heaving.

Fu Yancheng immediately bent down, grasping her hand tightly in his own. "Don't be afraid, Xi Xi. The doctor is here."

"I'm right here with you. Nothing will happen."

At this moment, his entire world was filled only with concern for her well-being.

The doctor carefully questioned Qiao Xi about her symptoms and performed an initial physical examination, his expression growing more serious.

"There are many possible causes for sudden nausea and dry heaving. It may be a stress reaction from emotional upheaval, or it could be a gastrointestinal issue." He paused, his tone cautious. "To rule out other possibilities, I recommend a blood test and a comprehensive examination."

Fu Yancheng nodded immediately. "Yes, please arrange for the most thorough tests, with the best equipment."

He did not hesitate for a second; any potential risk had to be eliminated.

Fu Yancheng stayed by Qiao Xi's side throughout all the tests.

Most results would take some time, especially the detailed blood analysis, which would require two to three days.

Before leaving, the doctor instructed, "Get plenty of rest these next few days. Eat light meals, avoid emotional agitation, and return for a checkup if you feel unwell in any way."

Qiao Xi nodded. Though unwell and exhausted, her mind was still occupied by another concern.

She tugged at Fu Yancheng's sleeve, her voice weak. "Yancheng, I want to see my mother. I wonder how she's doing today."

"All right, I'll go with you." Fu Yancheng gently wrapped his arm around her, adjusting her coat to keep her from catching a chill.

The two of them made their way to the VIP ward where Zhao Huiyun was staying.

Opening the door, they saw that Zhao Huiyun had already awakened and was half sitting up in bed. Though her face was still wan from illness, her spirits seemed good. A nurse was carefully adjusting the flow of her IV.

"Mom!"

Seeing her mother awake, Qiao Xi's nose stung with emotion. She hurried to the bedside. "How are you feeling? Is there anywhere you still feel uncomfortable?"

Seeing her daughter and son-in-law, Zhao Huiyun’s face broke into a relieved smile, her hand closing warmly around Qiao Xi's. "Silly child, I’m all right now."

"The doctors said I’ve passed the most dangerous point, and now I just need good rest." Her gaze fell on Qiao Xi’s pale face, worry flickering in her eyes. "But you—why do you look so unwell?"

"Did you get scared? Mom’s fine now, don’t worry."

Fu Yancheng stepped forward, placing a hand on Qiao Xi’s shoulder, speaking gently to Zhao Huiyun. "Mom, you’ve just woken up and need absolute rest."

"Everything outside has been taken care of. You needn’t worry about a thing. Your only task is to recover fully."

His tone was steady and reassuring. "I’ve arranged everything here at the hospital—the best doctors and nurses. Please rest assured."

Qiao Xi quickly nodded in agreement. "Yes, Mom, listen to Yancheng. Don’t think about anything else, just rest. We’ll come see you every day."

Looking at her devoted children before her, Zhao Huiyun smiled with gratification and nodded repeatedly. "Good, good. I know. With Yancheng here, everything is fine. But don’t exhaust yourselves, especially you, Xi Xi. Your little face is so pale..."

After carefully reminding her mother again, they reluctantly left the ward.

Fu Yancheng helped Qiao Xi into the car, fastening her seatbelt himself.

"Now it’s your turn to go home and rest."

His voice was low and gentle. "Don’t think about anything. I’ll handle everything."

At home, Fu Yancheng almost forcibly settled Qiao Xi in bed.

He personally made sure she drank half a bowl of warm porridge.

His brow remained furrowed with worry, his every movement gentle, as though she were a fragile treasure.

"Are you feeling any better? Do you still feel nauseous?"

He knelt at her bedside, his palm gently resting on her forehead, checking her temperature. "Would you like some more porridge? I’ll have the kitchen make something light for you."

Qiao Xi shook her head, squeezed his hand, and managed a faint smile. "Much better, don’t worry. I’m probably just overtired."

Perhaps it was exhaustion after all the tests, or perhaps it was the sense of security his presence brought, but Qiao Xi finally fell into a deep, peaceful sleep.

Fu Yancheng sat at her bedside, gazing at her tranquil, sleeping face, his hand smoothing her slightly furrowed brow.

Only after making sure her breathing was steady and she was deeply asleep did he quietly rise and go to the study.

The study light remained on all night.

The next morning, when Qiao Xi awoke, much of her headache and nausea had subsided, though her body still felt weak.

She left the bedroom and saw that Fu Yancheng had already gone to the office, but the dining table held porridge and side dishes kept warm for her.

Her heart warmed.

Yet another matter, long buried in her heart, now surfaced.

She had always believed that her greatest benefactor—the one who had funded her education and changed her fate—was Lu Yanzhi.

Back then, every clue, every subtle hint from Lu Yanzhi, had led her to believe that the generous aid came from him.

But now, Lu Yanzhi’s true nature had been fully revealed. His so-called kindness was all a lie, and he had even plotted against her.

So, the one who had appeared like a god at her lowest point, quietly paying her tuition fees without ever leaving a name—who could it really have been?

With this thought, Qiao Xi pressed her lips together, picked up her phone, and dialed Gu Ranran’s number.

The call connected quickly. Gu Ranran’s voice was energetic but tinged with worry. "Xi Bao! How are you? Is Auntie all right?"

"Ranran, I’m fine, and my mother is out of danger now." Qiao Xi paused, her voice calm but carrying a rare gravity.

"There’s something I need your help with. It’s very important—and it may require absolute secrecy, even from Yancheng for now."

Catching the seriousness in her tone, Gu Ranran grew solemn at once. "Just tell me. If it’s within my power, I’ll do it!"

"Help me investigate someone—or rather, a sum of money from many years ago."

Qiao Xi took a deep breath and spoke with clear deliberation. "Find out who it was that, when I was about to drop out of university at my most desperate moment, anonymously funded my education through a charitable foundation. I want to know who truly helped me back then."
