Chapter 67: The Invasion of the Dragonfly Beasts
“Chirp! Chirp!”
A mature Bardora Beast soared from the distant sky toward the stone house where Zhao Jie and the others were gathered, its piercing cries ringing out as it flew.
At the sound, the expressions of the Digimon Tamers guarding this small digital sanctuary, including Old Xiao, changed dramatically.
It was the warning cry given only when an enemy attack was imminent.
“Hurry, get the children out!” Old Xiao shouted at the others.
“For certain reasons, today’s training ends here. Everyone, return to base at once!”
Quickly, more than a dozen people gathered together and hurried toward the sanctuary’s exit.
“Roar!”
Several ape beasts, each taller than a man, raced across the visible plains toward their position.
“Whizz!”
Digimon appeared in the sky as well, bypassing the Bardora Beast and heading straight for the group.
“Bang!”
The Wasp Beast arrived just in time, intercepting the mature Dragonfly Beast.
Crackle!
Azure lightning radiated from the Dragonfly Beast’s body—its signature move, Thunder Flash.
Caught off guard after rushing to intercept, the Wasp Beast was paralyzed by the lightning, its entire body stiff and numb.
Swish!
With a forceful collision, the Dragonfly Beast sent the immobilized Wasp Beast flying and pressed on toward the stone house.
“This is bad!”
Seeing this, Old Xiao and the others felt their hearts sink. The Dragonfly Beast was clearly targeting them, and Zhao Jie’s students were only halfway back.
How could they withstand the attack?
The Wasp Beast and Bardora Beast would not make it in time to save them.
“What should we do?”
One of the Tamers asked Old Xiao anxiously.
What should we do?
He wished he knew the answer himself.
Taking a deep breath, Old Xiao fixed his gaze on the approaching Dragonfly Beast and spoke in a deep voice, “We’ll stop it with our lives. I’ll go first. We must get the children out safely.”
“It’s coming.”
He drew another breath, his legs trembling and his body feeling as heavy as lead.
If there were a choice, no one would choose death.
Between life and death, there were things even more precious than life itself worth protecting.
“Come on! I’m not afraid of you!”
Blood rushed to Old Xiao’s face, veins standing out on his skin as he stepped forward and shouted at the Dragonfly Beast in the sky.
His action succeeded in drawing the creature’s attention; it sped toward him, wings flashing coldly, promising to slice through flesh with ease.
“Old Xiao!”
The others, eyes red, turned to urge the children to hurry back to the base.
They couldn’t let Old Xiao’s sacrifice be in vain.
“Next, let me go!”
“Let me do it. You’re the youngest among us. If I fall, I’ll keep Old Xiao company.”
Hearing their talk, Zhao Jie felt his blood boil.
And yet, there was something he couldn’t help but shout, loud and clear.
Were they not considering him at all? He was a full-fledged Digimon Tamer, after all!
“Agumon—Digivolve!”
A surge of evolutionary light burst from Agumon’s body, transforming it into data; digital runes flew from its brow and merged with the light.
In the next moment, Tyrannosaurus Beast appeared before them.
“Tyrannosaurus Beast, Super Flame!”
No time to lose—scorching orange fire erupted from Tyrannosaurus Beast’s mouth, forming a massive serpent of flame in the air that appeared above Old Xiao’s head with a swift hiss.
Bang!
Old Xiao, feeling the Dragonfly Beast’s arrival, closed his eyes in despair.
He could never match a mature Dragonfly Beast.
But then, something felt off. The Dragonfly Beast had been struck and sent flying, its body engulfed in flames.
“Roar!”
Tyrannosaurus Beast charged forward.
Thud! Thud!
The ground shook with each stride; Old Xiao, still stunned, watched as a huge shadow flashed past him.
“Gale Tail!”
Zhao Jie’s voice rang out again. Tyrannosaurus Beast leaped from the ground, its massive tail whipping through the air and striking the Dragonfly Beast at incredible speed.
Boom!
The Dragonfly Beast fell from the sky, knocked to the earth by Tyrannosaurus Beast’s tail.
“Old Xiao, don’t hog all the glory! I want to be a hero too!”
Zhao Jie appeared at Old Xiao’s side, looking at him as he spoke.
“You rascal!”
Old Xiao glanced at Tyrannosaurus Beast, then at Zhao Jie. He had truly overlooked the young man, subconsciously assuming he could be of no help.
Now he saw how wrong he’d been. If not for Zhao Jie’s intervention, he would have died right here.
“What are you all standing around for? Get back to the base, now!”
The other Tamers, faces bright with relief, urged the students who remained frozen to move.
Buzz… Buzz…
The Dragonfly Beast rose from the ground again, its compound eyes glaring furiously at Tyrannosaurus Beast.
Crackle!
Thunder flashed across its body; its earlier misstep had cost it, but the battle was only just beginning.
Swish!
With its special move unleashed, the Dragonfly Beast’s speed leaped to a new level, leaving only a streak in the sky.
“Giant Horn Assault.”
Zhao Jie’s voice echoed in Tyrannosaurus Beast’s ear.
At the same time, the digital fusion unfolded, Zhao Jie’s strategy appearing clearly in Tyrannosaurus Beast’s mind.
Thud! Thud!
Tyrannosaurus Beast charged forward, neither dodging nor retreating, heading straight for the oncoming Dragonfly Beast.
Bang!
Lightning flashed, powerful bolts danced across Tyrannosaurus Beast’s body, but simultaneously, the Dragonfly Beast was knocked flying.
The thunder caused Tyrannosaurus Beast great pain, but through digital fusion, part of the anguish was shared with Zhao Jie.
The planned tactics could still be executed.
“Super Flame.”
The orange-red fire, blazing with intense heat, struck the Dragonfly Beast again. Its wings, which granted it flight, melted away under the high temperature.
Bang!
The Dragonfly Beast collapsed, unable to fight any longer.
Just then, the Wasp Beast finally arrived, plunging its deadly stinger into the Dragonfly Beast, sending it into unconsciousness.
Zhao Jie watched as the Wasp Beast stabbed the creature, eyes wide.
“Is this… stealing the kill?”
