Chapter 140: At the Hour of Peril (Third Update—Please Subscribe)
“Enemy attack!”
“Enemy attack!”
Shrill alarms rang out throughout the base. As they watched the Hellbeasts and Zudomon steadily advance toward them, every Digital Tamer still inside the base drew a sharp breath.
“One, two, three, four! Four Overlord-class Perfect Digimon!”
Someone counted them in a trembling voice, a trace of despair appearing on his face.
At this moment, everyone knew the attack had been carefully planned. But realizing that now was already too late. With the strength of the Digital Tamers stationed at the main base, there was no way they could withstand the assault of four Overlord-class Perfect Digimon!
“Don’t panic! Hold the line! Someone has already gone to call for reinforcements!”
At this critical moment, an Elite-level Digital Tamer who had been stationed here all along stepped forward.
Digital Tamers whose partners had reached the Overlord rank were known as Elite-level Tamers, while the partners of Master-level Tamers had reached the Supreme rank.
As soon as the Elite-level Tamer spoke, his Digimon appeared outside the base as well.
It was a SuperStarmon whose strength had reached the Overlord rank.
“Halley Storm!”
The instant it appeared, SuperStarmon decisively unleashed its signature attack.
A shower of enormous meteorites formed from digital energy descended from the sky, dazzling as a magnificent meteor shower.
Yet hidden within that brilliance was terrifying destructive power.
Boom!
Rumble!
The meteorites crashed down, successfully halting the advance of the Digimon.
Taking advantage of the brief respite, one powerful Perfect Digimon after another appeared outside the base. No matter what happened, this place could not be allowed to fall.
“Roar!”
The not particularly large Woodmon let out a cackling laugh. Huge vines burst from beneath the earth, tearing apart the surrounding terrain. Some even shot toward the Perfect Digimon inside the base.
Bang!
Such an attack posed little threat to Perfect Digimon, but to those whose partners had only reached the Champion stage, it was a sword hanging above their heads.
“Chirp!”
The Overlord-class humanoid eagle Digimon in the sky swung its arms, releasing its signature attack, Wind Spirit Bomb!
No—this was no longer merely a Wind Spirit Bomb. It was a storm of them. Countless Wind Spirit Bombs rained down like a violent squall, striking toward the main base.
At the same time, the other Overlord-class Digimon launched their attacks as well.
“Zero-One, it seems you were worrying needlessly. These people simply aren’t strong enough to resist the attacks of those Digimon!”
Standing in the distance and watching the battle, a member of the Truth Organization let out a relieved breath when he saw that the Digimon at the main base could not even mount an effective counterattack.
“Don’t relax. You humans are far too cunning!”
Zero-One’s voice rang out. Without turning his head, he stared intently at the battle raging within the main base.
Us humans?
The others exchanged glances, but wisely said nothing. They merely watched Zero-One gaze toward the distant battlefield.
惨惨惨!
The strength of Overlord-class Digimon far surpassed that of ordinary Perfect Digimon. Even several Perfect Digimon working together could do no more than struggle to hold back the onslaught.
Little by little, the battle line advanced toward the main base.
...
“What’s going on?!”
Zhao Jie and the others had already arrived near the main base. They stared, dumbfounded, at the base under attack.
By now, it was no longer only the four of them. On their way back, they had encountered two other squads, and more than a dozen people had gathered together.
“We have to go help!”
Wen Gong and the others looked anxious, preparing to rush forward.
“Wait…”
Zhao Jie’s voice reached their ears.
Hearing him, Wen Gong halted and looked at him in confusion.
The members of the other two squads naturally paid little attention to Zhao Jie, a mere youngster. But Wen Gong still commanded a certain amount of prestige among them.
When they saw Wen Gong stop, they stopped as well.
“Kid, don’t tell me you’re afraid of dying. If you don’t dare go, then fine—but why drag the rest of us into being cowards too?”
Chu Tingzhong, the captain of one of the squads, mocked Zhao Jie.
“Old Chu!”
Wen Gong displeasedly glanced at Chu Tingzhong. The others might not know Zhao Jie’s strength, but how could he not? Seeing Chu Tingzhong needle him with his words, Wen Gong was rather unhappy.
“Uncle Chu, you can eat whatever you like, but you can’t say whatever you like!”
Fu Yue also spoke up.
Hearing both of them say this, Chu Tingzhong’s expression grew somewhat sullen. They saw each other every day, after all. Why were they ganging up on him?
I’d like to see what this kid has to say.
He gave a cold laugh inwardly and fell silent, turning his gaze toward Zhao Jie.
“Afraid to die? Yes, I am afraid to die. But I’m even more afraid of throwing my life away for nothing! The ancient sage Mencius once said that everyone must die, but some deaths are heavier than Mount Tai, while others are lighter than a feather. If we rush over there to provide support right now, we’ll only be throwing our lives away for nothing.”
“You can all see that those Overlord-class Perfect Digimon are extraordinarily powerful. Even if we go over, at most we’ll merely make them spend a little more time killing us.”
Hearing this, Chu Tingzhong snorted coldly.
The reasoning was sound, but if they did not go over, what else could they do? If they simply stood here and watched without lifting a finger, he feared he would suffer nightmares every night afterward.
“Then what do you suggest we do?”
Nie Yishan, the other squad captain who had remained silent until now, looked thoughtfully at Zhao Jie.
“It’s simple. Find the source!”
Zhao Jie looked toward Wen Gong, confident that he would understand what he meant.
The moment Zhao Jie saw those Digimon attacking the main base, he had realized that this was a conspiracy of the Truth Organization. There had to be members of that organization orchestrating everything from behind the scenes.
“Find the source? Then tell us where this source is.”
Chu Tingzhong’s eyes lit up, and he looked at Zhao Jie with disdain.
He had expected the youngster to offer some profound insight, but instead he had come out with such an empty statement.
“Old Chu, let him finish. Do you really think it’s a coincidence that these Overlord-class Digimon appeared here?”
Nie Yishan helplessly patted his old companion on the shoulder. One shouldn’t look down on someone simply because he was young.
Hmm?
Chu Tingzhong froze at those words.
“Not a coincidence? What, are you saying someone placed them here?”
After he said this, he saw Zhao Jie looking at him as though he were an idiot.
P.S. There will only be three updates today. Seeing the votes increase so slowly, and with the results being so poor, I’ve lost much of my enthusiasm for writing. Please allow me to adjust my state of mind.
Also, thank you to everyone who subscribed, sent rewards, cast recommendation votes, or voted for the monthly ticket.
Everyone, please rest assured. I’m only adjusting my mindset. There will be a ten-thousand-word update tomorrow, and a Digimon I’ve been eagerly anticipating will finally make its appearance.
Take a guess—which Digimon will it be?
