Volume One, Chapter 89: He Has Come to Add Insult to Injury!
At one o’clock in the morning, the doorbell rang again and again.
It couldn’t be Xu Yiyi. If she was coming, she would have arrived the moment she got off work; there was no way she would drag it out to this hour.
It couldn’t be Lou Ye either. He was too measured to come disturb her in the dead of night.
Then there was only Lu Jinnian.
“Lu Jinnian, are you out of your mind? What the hell are you barking up at this hour?”
The door swung open, and the first thing to meet her was Sang Wan’s furious outburst.
Lou Ye was in a splendid mood.
When Sang Wan saw who stood outside, she froze. “Lou Ye, I’m sor—sorry. I thought it was…”
“It’s fine.” Lou Ye smiled with great magnanimity. “It wasn’t me you were cursing anyway. Sister, I’m not angry!”
He scratched his hair as if to see whether it had been mussed.
Sang Wan glanced back at the clock in the blurred darkness, then asked him, “Why are you here at this hour? Is something wrong?”
“No…” Lou Ye shook his head, indignant. “Sister, I’m here to complain!”
“About what?”
“I ran into Lu Jinnian at the bar.”
Lou Ye said gravely, “There were a whole crowd of people in their private room, and they called over a bunch of hostesses. I even heard his friends keep saying little sister-in-law this, little sister-in-law that, asking Lu Jinnian why he didn’t bring his girlfriend along.”
“So?”
Sang Wan only grew more bewildered. “What does that have to do with me?”
Lou Ye stopped short.
Yes, he had come to pour oil on the fire.
He had prepared a whole arsenal of embellished, inflammatory words. But at Sang Wan’s one question, he suddenly felt there was no need to say any of it.
Before he could figure out how to end the conversation naturally and send each other back to their own homes and their own beds, a weight settled on his head.
Sang Wan patted him there. “All right, go back and sleep. I know you’re good to me.”
One little figure was stamping furiously: She patted my head!!!
Another little figure looked utterly baffled: Does she take me for a child? Or does she really think I’m her little brother?
Lou Ye’s expression turned unreadable.
Sang Wan yawned and waved him off. “I can’t even keep my eyes open. Lou Ye, hurry back… good night!”
“Good night!”
At once, he felt that all the anger he had spent the last few hours nursing had gone to waste.
In high spirits, Lou Ye’s voice rang bright as he turned and sauntered upstairs.
When he woke the next morning, daylight was already flooding the window.
Something felt off.
How could he have lumped those two things together?
Sang Wan truly had not taken Lu Jinnian’s remorse to heart.
But the fact remained that Lu Jinnian had eaten his noodles and petted his little one!!!
He called the property management company, and the young boss, still flushed with sleep and bad temper, was imposing enough to make people quail.
“Is there any luxury residential-commercial complex in the capital better than Wanxin Apartments?”
The property manager on the other end was trembling as if caught in a sieve. He had no idea when the big boss had made a low-key surprise inspection. “No!”
“Then may I ask why non-owners can come and go as they please, as though strolling through a wet market?”
“...I’ll call an emergency meeting immediately and make reforms. I guarantee everything will be rectified before noon today. Please rest assured, President Lou!”
After hanging up, Lou Ye felt much better.
He picked up his phone and sent Sang Wan a message.
[Sister, do I deserve lunch?]
Sang Wan replied very quickly.
After a string of speechless ellipses, she said, [I was just about to make some. Come downstairs!]
Lou Ye got dressed in a few quick motions and began washing up.
Three minutes later, he rang Sang Wan’s doorbell.
“Lou Ye, come in yourself. I don’t have a hand free to open the door.”
A faint voice came from within. A devastatingly handsome smile curved Lou Ye’s lips.
This was Sang Wan’s home.
But he had the password, the fingerprint access, and facial recognition.
Did Lu Jinnian?
No!!!
Lou Ye lowered his head. The touch screen lit up automatically.
Buzz.
Facial recognition complete. The main door opened at once.
Lou Ye strolled in with leisurely ease.
2S came meowing and pouncing toward him.
When Lou Ye bent to scoop it up, his arm suddenly stiffened.
Lu Jinnian’s hand on 2S flashed through his mind. Lou Ye cast the cat a disgusted look. You’re dirty now, you know that?
2S did not know.
It only knew that Lou Ye, who loved squeezing and teasing it into every possible shape, wanted nothing to do with it today.
“Meow, meow…”
2S spun in anxious circles.
Lou Ye put his hands in his pockets and wandered into the kitchen.
Sang Wan was kneading dough, both sleeves rolled high, both hands dusted with flour.
Seeing Lou Ye, she said casually, “I’m planning to make stuffed pancakes for lunch. Do you want some?”
“Whatever you make, I’ll love to eat!”
Lou Ye answered, but just as he was about to sit down, he remembered that Lu Jinnian had sat there before. His body went rigid, and he straightened again. “Sister, would you mind if I changed the dining table and chairs?”
“What?”
Sang Wan looked baffled.
Lou Ye remained calm. “Nothing. I just suddenly stopped liking off-white.”
But the problem is, I live here.
And this table…
Oh, yes. The young master came over every day for dinner.
He’s picky about food, and he’s picky about everything else too.
He has his own unique taste!
Only, when exactly had that taste changed?
“Just make do for now…” Sang Wan kept kneading without turning her head. “After I’m done cooking, I’ll go pick a new one. What color do you like? Black? Or white?”
“You make the pancakes…”
Lou Ye lifted his chin to indicate that she should keep busy, then turned and made a phone call.
The sizzle of pancakes rising from the pan filled the kitchen, and the doorbell rang right after.
Two waves of people arrived in succession.
The first took away 2S, which let out a shrill, miserable cry.
Lou Ye stepped forward with an expression of helpless reproach. “You’re dirty now, do you know that? Come back after you’ve been washed clean. Be good…”
2S’s meowing disappeared beyond the closing elevator doors.
The second wave of people removed the table and chairs, then installed and arranged a new dining set.
Sang Wan glanced back.
Mm.
Very much in keeping with the young master’s compulsive nature.
The same brand.
The same style.
Only the color changed from off-white to pure white.
The person who came to oversee the replacement and installation was Yang Yan.
As though everything were already under control, Yang Yan made no sound from start to finish.
When he left, he even conjured, as if by magic, a bouquet of red roses, placed them in a Baccarat crystal vase, and set it on the dining table.
Warm sunlight streamed in through the floor-to-ceiling windows. The transparent Baccarat vase shone with a bright brilliance, casting on the tabletop a glittering ripple like light on water.
The blooming red roses were passionate and radiant, intoxicating to behold.
Lou Ye cast him a faint, approving look.
Yang Yan gave a slight nod: Wishing Boss and Miss Sang a pleasant weekend.
The lid came off the pan.
The sizzle of pancakes filled the air.
Fragrance drifted through the room.
“Wait…”
Just as Sang Wan used the spatula to lift a stuffed pancake and was about to plate it, Lou Ye urgently called a halt. “Did Lu Jinnian touch this plate?”
Lou Ye remembered clearly.
Last night, Sang Wan had sent him a photo of the dinner table: four dishes and two bowls of noodles. The plates holding the food were exactly the same kind she was about to use for the pancakes now.
Sang Wan was confused.
Used it? Or… not used it?
The dishes at home were all from the same set. Last night, Lu Jinnian had finished eating on his own and left.
She had not touched the remaining dishes or that bowl of noodles at all. She had thrown everything away and put the bowls and plates into the dishwasher.
After a night, the plates and cutlery in the dishwasher were all gleaming.
How was she supposed to know which one had been used by Lu Jinnian?
“You, come here…”
He pointed at one of the quick-handed movers, then at the cupboard. “All the bowls, plates, chopsticks, spoons… replace them!”
Sang Wan froze again, her face full of incomprehension.
Sending the cat for a bath.
Replacing the dining table and chairs.
And now discarding every piece of tableware in her house.
Why did she feel as if Lou Ye were making a mountain out of a molehill?
