Chapter 5: Su Bai Strikes Again with Rewards
Su Ruan looked at the blue wolf and found it rather amusing. She tossed the wild chicken bones she had eaten onto the ground. Immediately, the blue wolf and two little wolf pups gathered around.
“Your luck is really something!”
“I just saw that blue wolf—it must be a wolf king. It’s probably been driven out of the pack along with its pups after being injured.”
While playing with the wolf pups, Su Ruan said this.
“Can you really tell that just by looking?”
“Well, I come from a family of military generals, so I have some knowledge about these things. Although this blue wolf looks downtrodden, it still carries an imposing aura without even needing to show anger.”
“Besides, a typical wolf king’s howl sounds sharper than that of an ordinary wolf, which helps the sound travel farther and better coordinate the pack.”
Lu Chuan nodded and lightly patted one of the wolf pups on the head.
“Didn’t expect your father to be a wolf king, huh?”
The little pup looked up at Lu Chuan with a hint of grievance, as if asking, “Why did you pat me?” But in the end, it obediently lay back down.
“If there’s anything you need help with at home, just say the word!”
Unlike Bai Siyu, Su Ruan was straightforward and confident as she looked at Lu Chuan. “I don’t know much, but I can still go hunting in the mountains!”
“Just make me a bow, and the two of us can hunt enough supplies in half a month—no problem!”
Bai Siyu lowered her head somewhat shyly. From her perspective, she felt that coming into this household, she could only bring trouble to Lu Chuan and offer no benefit.
“Don’t worry about it yet!”
Lu Chuan waved his hand.
“Just take some time to adjust first.”
He then looked at Bai Siyu in front of him.
Name: Bai Siyu
Age: 16
Appearance Rating: 91
Favorability: 48
Benefits upon acceptance: Basic Hunting Skills (obtained); Basic Beast Taming Skills (obtained); Basic Cooking Skills; Intermediate Planting Skills.
A trace of surprise flashed in Lu Chuan’s eyes. Bai Siyu’s favorability was rising quite quickly. It was clear she was quite innocent.
Su Ruan’s profile also changed slightly.
Name: Su Ruan
Age: 17
Appearance Rating: 89
Favorability: 29
Benefits upon acceptance: Personal Space: 3 cubic meters (obtained); Basic Kiln-Firing Skill!
Seeing Su Ruan’s new skill made Lu Chuan feel a bit astonished.
Kiln-firing? What is that? It sounded strange.
As a warm sensation spread through his body, Lu Chuan finally understood that this kiln-firing skill referred to making a kiln capable of firing porcelain or bricks.
What a useful skill! With this, he could build a brick kiln and fire bricks, meaning there’d be no need to live in these drafty mud houses anymore.
After finishing the meal, Lu Chuan returned to his room.
Bai Siyu and Su Ruan exchanged a glance and then returned to the west room.
“Su Ruan, he seems to be...” Bai Siyu opened her mouth, her eyes tinged with worry.
Their identities were unusual. Though they were beautiful, who in an ordinary farming family would want to marry women who couldn’t even carry or shoulder heavy loads? They had finally found a home.
Bai Siyu was genuinely afraid. After all, if Lu Chuan really didn’t want them, their best fate would be to be taken into some powerful household as minor concubines. But that was unlikely, as no one wanted to get involved with their family affairs.
“Don’t worry!”
Though Su Ruan also felt uneasy inside, she patted Bai Siyu’s hand. “He’s a good person, and he’s capable. We’re truly lucky!”
Meanwhile, Lu Chuan lay in bed, deep in thought.
Since Su Ruan came from a military family, he wasn’t keen on taking her hunting with him. Simply put, he carried too many secrets, especially with his spatial ability. Having her around would make it difficult to use it freely.
Hunting small prey posed no big issue, but if it were wild boars or the like, it would be exhausting beyond measure.
“Tomorrow, I’ll head to town and sell the roe deer meat.”
“Then I’ll look for some affordable grain.”
He had to pay the yearly grain tax. The grain didn’t need to be top quality—just passable.
Grain prices in this era were much higher than he had expected.
But that was only natural.
The harsher the disaster, the more expensive grain became, and human life was valued less and less.
Perhaps from fatigue, Lu Chuan fell asleep shortly after lying down.
The next morning, he woke to find Su Ruan and Bai Siyu already up and cooking porridge. They had even skinned the silly roe deer.
When Lu Chuan woke, Bai Siyu’s cheeks blushed slightly. “I noticed your clothes are thin, so I thought I’d make you a warm garment from the roe deer skin. It’ll be more comfortable when you go hunting in the mountains.”
“Thanks for your hard work!” Lu Chuan nodded.
The so-called porridge was actually plain wheat soup, without much fat, paired with some pickled radishes and salted vegetables—a simple meal.
Though filling, it wouldn’t stave off hunger for long.
“I’m heading to town today to sell the meat. Is there anything you want me to bring back?” Lu Chuan asked.
Su Ruan hesitated for a moment. “Do you have a firewood knife at home? I can go chop wood when I’m free—otherwise, the house really feels cold this winter.”
“Yes, the firewood knife is in the woodshed,” Lu Chuan said, pointing to a low, shabby hut awkwardly.
“Oh, that’s the woodshed?” Su Ruan covered her mouth, laughing. “I thought it was an unused latrine!”
“...”
Bai Siyu couldn’t help but chuckle but quickly cleared her throat, feeling it might be improper. “Brother Lu, I need some sewing supplies and a set of long needles for weaving.”
Ordinary households didn’t have weaving machines. To make cloth, you either bought it or wove it by hand with long needles.
The thread used wasn’t silk but flax, and clothes woven with it were fine for summer but barely enough to cover oneself in winter.
“Alright!” Lu Chuan made a mental note.
Using the sticks he had brought back yesterday, he hung the meat evenly at both ends and descended the mountain along the path.
However, Lu Chuan didn’t head straight to town.
Instead, he took a detour to visit Widow Wang’s house.
He wondered how she was doing and kept pondering how to take in Chen Qingqing.
After all, the rewards she offered were truly tempting to Lu Chuan.
