“Good.” Virak was not sure whether this was a good thing or a bad one.

In his previous life, he had been so untrustworthy that he was rarely allowed to go anywhere alone, let alone given money to squander. Now, with ten thousand gold crowns in his pocket, he found himself at a loss.

This was entirely different from the one hundred and fifty to one hundred and sixty thousand gold crowns he had earned the previous night. The money Carmine had given him had to be spent within three days. Though Virak had given Diaz ten thousand crowns as settlement money alone yesterday, that had been money kept out of sight. Every expenditure made with this sum would be noticed, which made spending it rather troublesome.

Virak decided to follow Fletcher’s instructions and spend it all over the course of three days. Though this would occupy part of his time each day, it would give him a reasonable excuse to leave the house daily. As for spending the money on things Chris had cared about, Virak intended to follow Fletcher’s instructions to the letter.

Chris had wished for equality for all while he was alive. Virak could not achieve that, of course, but he could use the money to help some of the poor, which would at least bring him somewhat in line with what Chris had wanted to accomplish.

After bidding Fletcher farewell, Virak got into the assigned car.

“Daniel,” Virak said to the young man in the driver’s seat, who looked about the same age as Nord. “Do you know where I might find a charity banquet?”

“I’m sorry, Mr. Chris. I don’t,” Daniel replied apologetically.

“Look into it when you have time. I need to attend one sometime in the next few days,” Virak said.

“Yes, sir. Where are we going now?” Daniel asked.

Virak had nothing urgent to attend to that day. After thinking for a moment, he said, “Let’s just drive around for a while.”

“Yes, sir.” Daniel started the engine.

Watching the scenery streak past outside, Virak began considering how he might control Daniel. He would be meeting Colin and Diaz over the weekend. Colin was his closest friend, so there was nothing unusual about seeing him often. But if Daniel followed him every time he went out, it would make many other things inconvenient.

The matter of the driver, as well as the problem of how to spend ten thousand gold crowns, needed to be resolved as soon as possible.

Virak could not help giving a bitter laugh. Only the night before, he had lamented that he suddenly had nothing to do. Now one new problem after another had already appeared. It seemed that leisure was merely an illusion. If he wanted never again to worry about all sorts of problems, he would have to wait until he had the money and could leave the country.

“Mr. Chris, long time no see!” Once the car had driven away from the Thomas family estate, Daniel stopped pretending and greeted Virak with a broad grin.

“Hm?” Virak turned to look at him.

Daniel’s sudden remark, combined with the faint sense of familiarity Virak had felt toward him, indicated that the two of them already knew each other. Yet Daniel had not spoken this way when Fletcher introduced them. Clearly, their relationship was not a simple one.

“Yes, it has been a while.” Virak could only respond vaguely for the moment, while desperately trying to recall Daniel’s identity.

“After the last meeting, I never had the chance to see you again. Later, when I heard that something had happened to you, I worried for a long time. Thankfully, you’re all right. Everyone in the organization has been on edge lately, but I knew that as long as you were still here, there was no obstacle we could not overcome. No matter how difficult the circumstances, we would endure them together!” Daniel said excitedly.

After hearing this, Virak finally remembered him.

Daniel was also a member of the rebel organization. He had been among the more than two hundred people Virak initially selected, but during the subsequent screening, Daniel had been eliminated for failing to meet the requirements. Virak had therefore paid little attention to him afterward.

“How did you get in?” Virak asked, delighted.

His delight was genuine. If the driver was also a member of the rebel organization, then the problem would be solved at once. Fletcher would have no way to obtain an accurate account of Virak’s daily movements, allowing him to meet with others and make arrangements far more freely.

“After learning that you were still alive, we kept trying to contact you. But aside from that one trip you made to the ballroom more than ten days ago, you never left the house again. Comrade Chloe had no choice but to find a way to arrange for us to infiltrate the household and establish contact with you,” Daniel explained.

“Did anyone else get in?” Virak asked expectantly.

If others had also infiltrated the Thomas family estate, it would make things even more convenient for him. For the sake of safety, he might not even need to leave the house to meet Chloe directly. Any future matters could simply be conveyed through the undercover members inside.

“You are currently short of servants, but the application requirements are extremely strict. I’m the only one who made it through.” Daniel shook his head.

The assassination of Dempsey and the theft of the files had probably made the Thomas family extremely wary. They no longer dared to hire people casually. Even so, having one person infiltrate the household was already wonderful news. Virak no longer needed to worry about his movements being exposed to Fletcher, and communicating with the rebel organization would be much easier from now on.

When Virak had met Chloe the previous day, she had not mentioned any of this. Most likely, Daniel had not yet succeeded in being hired as of then.

As they spoke, yet another problem was solved. Things were progressing so smoothly that Virak could hardly believe it. He could not help becoming cautious; his instincts told him that matters could not continue going this smoothly forever.

“It’s good enough that you’re here. I was confined to the house for a while and couldn’t learn anything about how you were doing. I was worried about all of you as well,” Virak said. “Now that you’re here, even if I can’t get away personally, I’ll still be able to pass information out.”

“Yes, Mr. Chris.” Daniel was extremely excited. Serving as such an important link within the rebel organization was a precious opportunity for him. “This is wonderful news. As soon as I received word this morning, I came straight here. I haven’t even had time to inform Comrade Chloe.”

“There’s no hurry. Go and report to her tonight. Chloe and I have agreed to meet every Tuesday and Saturday from now on, so tomorrow night you’ll have to drive me to the underground fight arena.” Virak was in a much better mood. He rolled down the window and let the cool breeze wash over him, a faint smile appearing on his face.

“Yes, Mr. Chris,” Daniel said.

Sitting in the back seat and watching Daniel’s silhouette, Virak suddenly thought that he resembled Nord in some ways. In fact, before he had learned of Dempsey’s betrayal, he had already decided what roles the two men would play.

He would make Dempsey his bodyguard and Nord his driver—one to protect his safety, the other to handle his transportation.

Unfortunately, he had not expected everything to change so quickly. Dempsey had betrayed him and had died as an indirect consequence of Virak’s actions. Nord had refused to submit to Fletcher, and his fate was now unknown.

He would see Diaz again tomorrow. Virak hoped Diaz would bring him good news.

Without bothering to hide his thoughts from Daniel, he leaned back against the seat and sighed softly.

“I hope our good luck lasts a little longer.”
