Chapter 43 Unrighteous Wealth
Hera and Fan Zhiheng arrived at the Hsi Estate in Sentosa. As soon as they parked the car, the assistant butler hurried over with the expression of someone whose savior had finally returned.
"Hera, the people from Symphonie Jewels are hounding the young lady for money. I didn't dare call the police for fear of triggering negative press."
"Take Dr. Fan to rest for a moment, then head to the laboratory building. I'll handle the young lady's situation now," Hera instructed the assistant butler.
Upon entering the main building, Hera saw Xirei sitting haughtily on the sofa, scrolling through her phone. The young male sales representative who had delivered the jewelry at the birthday banquet earlier was being kept at a safe distance from Xirei by the butler and a security guard.
Hera stepped forward and said gently to the male sales representative, "Miss Whitney's sudden accident deeply saddened Mr. Hsi when he learned of it today, but we will make the subsequent payments for that Paraiba necklace. How about this—"
Before Hera could finish, Xirei put down the live-streaming video she was watching on her phone. Looking like an arrogant imperial princess of ancient times, she cast a sidelong glance at Hera and the sales representative. "Whitney had just ordered this necklace when she died. The necklace is cursed, and I don't want it anymore."
The male sales representative blurted out anxiously, "Miss Hsi, how can you say that? It was broadcasted on the news that the distinguished guest passed away from a snakebite while walking at night. What does that have to do with Symphonie Jewels?"
Xirei glared with almond-shaped eyes. "I say it has to do with us, and it has to do with us. Sue me if you have the ability. You little corporate slave, you're also from China, so what act are you putting on for me? Don't you know that in China, online shopping comes with a seven-day no-reason return policy? Here, your jewelry is right there, take it back."
"Corporate slave" was a playful term for overworked wage earners. Workers might use it to self-deprecate, but coming from the mouth of a young lady from the ultra-wealthy class like Xirei, it was hardly any different from a personal insult.
That luxury jewelry brand's male sales representative had worked hard alongside the manager and several male celebrities during the banquet that night to sell the large necklace and a few medium-to-small pieces of jewelry. He had been overjoyed, not expecting such a tragic turn of events when the wealthy female patron who placed the huge order had died.
The manager quickly sent the male sales representative to follow up on the subsequent payment.
And so, his worst fear came true—the order was falling through indeed. The crucial part was that it had nothing to do with the quality of the jewelry itself, but was purely due to the young socialite's capricious temperament.
Enduring the arrogant heiress's unreasonableness and condescending insults, the male sales representative made a restrained plea: "Miss Hsi, if this necklace is returned, I won't get my commission for this month. I really am counting on this commission to send back to China for my mother's medical treatment."
Xirei rolled her eyes, let out a cold snort, and said, "Are you right just because you're poor? Spare me with that moral kidnapping routine. If you keep nagging, believe me, I'll call the ladies who came to my birthday party that day right now and make them cancel their orders too."
The male sales representative could no longer take it.
He was around Xirei's age. Ten years ago, when he was still a middle school teenager, his father—who worked in the warehousing industry—was laid off due to the rapid development of AI, fell into a deep depression, jumped from a building, and was left severely disabled. His resilient mother worked three jobs single-handedly to cover the costs of her son's education and her husband's rehabilitation, eventually falling seriously ill from overwork. Now, he had finally found a job in the luxury goods industry, a sector not yet fully invaded by AI, hoping to afford slightly more expensive medicine with better therapeutic effects for his parents, only to suffer this ruthless beating from reality.
The male sales representative finally erupted, shouting, "You—you second-generation rich kids who live off your parents trampling on ordinary people and live like parasites, your consciences have been eaten by dogs! Miss Hsi, do you think your family's rise to wealth is some kind of secret? I'm going to go back today and post on social media what a wonderful story this is. Hsi Chieh, back then a swept-out liberal arts teacher, married into a powerful family as a kept man to an ugly daughter, got himself planted into the power supply circle, pulled all sorts of shameless tricks, literally worried his father-in-law and ugly wife to death, and became an AI tycoon himself. Too bad his only daughter is an absolute good-for-nothing who can only get a diploma because he throws money at universities through donations. Her whole life consists of nothing more than tipping borderline male live-streamers and bullying ordinary wage slaves. You're both utterly stupid and profoundly malicious!"
