Chapter 6: There Is Something Wrong With This World

Sir Lin and Sir Miao were the two men Lin Bei had seen in the newspaper—those who had chased a drug dealer for nine blocks and nearly got hit by a car. They were also the two protagonists in the series "Exorcist Police." Upon seeing Lin Bei appear, both Sir Lin and Sir Miao immediately shed their usual levity and adopted a serious demeanor. As for Ma Fei, he greeted Lin Bei with a warm smile and spoke first before Lin Bei could say anything: “Mr. Lin, it’s only been half a year since you donated ten million to our police force. Why are you donating again so soon? Have you run into some trouble?” Lin Bei’s lips curled slightly. “The police force is one thing, but once the funds reach your department, I doubt much remains. This time, I want to donate directly to your precinct. Is there a problem with that?” Ma Fei couldn’t refuse. Though accepting donations might stir envy among sister departments, it was undeniably a tangible achievement and benefit for him. Despite being disabled from the waist down, he had managed to reach the rank of police superintendent, all thanks to his polished, diplomatic nature. “Mr. Lin, you’re joking. We welcome your generosity wholeheartedly.” Lin Bei snapped his fingers. “Then it’s settled. Now, let’s talk about something else.” He turned to Sir Lin and Sir Miao. “Gentlemen, could you tell me about the drug dealer you were pursuing?” A flicker of hesitation crossed Sir Lin’s face. If Lin Bei had asked privately, he would have revealed everything without reservation, but with Ma Fei present, he dared not act on his own accord. He glanced at Ma Fei, seeking his superior’s stance. Ma Fei caught his gaze and smiled. “This case isn’t exactly classified. The media has reported most of it. Just tell Mr. Lin what you know.” Sir Lin relaxed and recounted the details of the arrest and their subsequent discoveries. “The suspect was very strange. I shot her several times, but she didn’t react at all. Furthermore, the coroner’s report said the woman had been dead for days already. That’s just absurd!” Lin Bei shook his head, smiling faintly as he looked at Ma Fei. “That’s not absurd at all, is it, Superintendent Ma?” Ma Fei maintained his cheerful expression, showing no change in mood. Lin Bei didn’t mind. Since Ma Fei was playing dumb, he decided to lay his cards on the table. “Superintendent Ma, I’ll be straightforward. I need you to transfer your old friend from Dongping Island. As compensation, I’ll tell you the truth behind this case.” Ma Fei narrowed his eyes; he had no doubt about the truthfulness of Lin Bei’s words. After all, this man had transformed from a newcomer on Hong Kong Island into one of the top ten tycoons within three years, with an astonishingly vast intelligence network.

Over the years, he had provided the police with valuable information, gaining a wide range of contacts and helping restore the police force’s reputation. In fact, the entire force owed Lin Bei a debt of gratitude. Whenever there was any stir at the top levels, Lin Bei often learned about it even before Superintendent Ma. Beyond official channels, Lin Bei also wielded significant influence over the underworld. It was no surprise he could uncover the mastermind ahead of the police. Ma Fei mulled it over and quickly made a decision. “Mr. Lin, the person you’re referring to must be Feng Lao Si, right? You’re in such a hurry to find him—did you get involved with something unsavory?” Lin Bei fixed Ma Fei with a deep gaze. “Superintendent Ma, don’t be too curious. Just tell me, can you do it or not?” Ma Fei smiled. “Of course, no problem. I happen to have business with him anyway.” Lin Bei nodded and snapped his fingers again. Gao Jin promptly placed a file on the table. After Ma Fei took the documents, Lin Bei warned, “This Japanese woman named Michiko is an heir of the Jiujuyi sect and specializes in unconventional and dark arts. I don’t recommend you move in and arrest her directly. Her villa may have other traps set.” Ma Fei was jolted inwardly. When he saw Michiko’s file, he had entertained similar thoughts. Although he often told his subordinates there were no ghosts in this world, only he knew the truth. Otherwise, upon learning about the suspect’s condition, he would not have called back Feng Lao Si, who was exiled to guard the reservoir on Dongping Island, so promptly. Lin Bei’s words quickly dispelled any lingering doubts. Then Ma Fei cast a warning glance at Sir Lin and Sir Miao. “Nothing about today’s matter is to be disclosed, or you’ll be assigned to guard the reservoir!” Sir Lin and Sir Miao exchanged looks and quickly affirmed their compliance. That should have been the end of it, but Lin Bei remembered something else. He asked Ma Fei, “Superintendent Ma, if it’s convenient, could you check whether there’s a man named Kuang Tianyou in your force?” Before Ma Fei could respond, Sir Miao uttered a surprised “Oh.” “Mr. Lin, you know Tianyou?” Lin Bei turned to Sir Miao and asked solemnly, “Are you familiar with Kuang Tianyou?” Sir Miao scratched his head. “We’re classmates from the same cohort. When we first started, we even patrolled together.” Lin Bei pressed on, “Does he have a son?”

Sir Miao nodded. “Yes, and his son is a child prodigy.” Sir Miao’s words confirmed Lin Bei’s suspicions. Indeed, there was a faction of zombies in this world with unconventional hairstyles who constantly talked about love and relationships. Zombies under the third generation were manageable and susceptible to physical attacks, but those above the third generation were immune to such assaults. Moreover, these nonconformists possessed all manner of strange abilities, including extreme speed and illusions. The most bizarre was Jing Tangben’s dream-entry power—killing within dreams was one thing, but causing a woman to conceive in her dreams was utterly terrifying. Just thinking about it chilled Lin Bei to the bone. Beyond these unconventional zombies, there were also apocalyptic figures like Nüwa, love-obsessed zombie ancestors, and those who liked to manipulate human fate. The key was madness—the greater the madness, the stronger the power. Lin Bei massaged his forehead and resolved that next time he entered the mysterious realm, he would ask his other selves if they had any way to travel again. He had no desire to remain in this world, no matter how invincible he might be, especially since there were always lunatics trying to destroy it. Once composed, Lin Bei asked Sir Miao, “Do you have Kuang Tianyou’s contact information?” Sir Miao nodded. He had recently shared tea with Kuang Tianyou, though the teahouse’s cleanliness was questionable, as Kuang had developed diarrhea afterward. After leaving Kuang Tianyou’s contact details, Ma Fei took Sir Lin and Sir Miao and departed. Lin Bei stared at the phone number on the note, hesitating whether to reach out now. Kuang was one of the few second-generation zombies, closely watched by many. Meeting him would expose Lin Bei’s existence to both the Pangu clan and Fate. But on second thought, Fate held the Heavenly Book, and Lin Bei had stirred up quite a bit on Hong Kong Island already—he was probably noticed long ago.
