Chapter 51: The Trace of the Cat Demon
Although this is a world of Hong Kong action and supernatural films, the death of a human is always a major event, no matter the circumstances.
Especially given a manner of death that immediately sounds suspicious.
Ever since learning that this world harbors various extraordinary and supernatural forces, Lin Bei has not dared to lower his guard for even a second.
According to the death described by Peter Chan, the employee was either bitten by a jiangshi or attacked by other supernatural entities and spirits.
Lin Bei had previously consulted Uncle Feng; although the current era is no longer suited for the survival of such entities, quite a few still manage to cling to life by absorbing human blood or vital energy.
When encountering such creatures, one should simply strike and destroy them. No matter how many excuses the adversary might have, it cannot conceal the reality of cannibalism.
After inquiring about Peter Chan's location, Lin Bei hung up the phone and turned to Uncle Feng, saying, "Something happened to one of my subordinates. It might be supernatural entities running amok, and I plan to go check it out. Would you like to come along?"
Uncle Feng shook his side and replied, "I still have to report back to the police station. Go and assess the situation first, and notify me if there truly are supernatural beings causing chaos."
Lin Bei nodded. Uncle Feng is a police officer and is inevitably bound by rules and restrictions, unable to act as freely as he can.
After pondering for a moment, he decided to notify Chung Fat-pak.
Although this man's skills are inferior to those of Uncle Feng, Uncle Kau, and Chang Thirteen, he is nevertheless an outstanding exorcist.
As for Ma Siu-ling, she is still busy with Ling Ling Tang, so it is best not to disturb her for now. Once they truly encounter a powerful demon, it will not be too late to notify her.
After notifying Chung Fat-pak, Lin Bei set off, taking along Xia Houwu and Feng Yuxiu.
---
At the entrance of the Fan's Building.
The surrounding area had already been cordoned off with police warning tape, and members of the Police Tactical Unit were keeping a vigilant watch over their surroundings, occasionally picking up their walkie-talkies to report the situation.
Judging solely from this posture, one could tell that the incident inside was likely far more complex than the deaths of just one or two people.
Although it was currently working hours, quite a few citizens still gathered around to watch the excitement and gawk.
Deaths happen every day in Hong Kong; shootouts and clashes between triad members are a common occurrence.
This has caused the nerves of Hong Kong citizens to grow increasingly desensitized, making them eager to crowd around whenever there is a spectacle.
Just as they were pointing and whispering about the scene inside, an extended-version Red Flag limousine pulled up outside the police cordon.
It instantly attracted the attention of the onlookers.
Every citizen in Hong Kong knew that in this particular territory, Lin Bei was the only person bold enough to ride in such a vehicle reserved exclusively for top officials.
Yet why would this billionaire appear here? Could he be connected to the case inside?
No one suspected Lin Bei of having ties to the criminal, after all, his reputation among the citizens was even higher than that of the Governor.
Should anyone dare to utter even half a bad word about Lin Bei, they wouldn't even need him to speak; those who had received his benevolence would swarm forward.
Once the car came to a halt, Wang Jianguo, who was driving, stepped out first and opened the door for Lin Bei.
Meanwhile, Feng Yuxiu and Xia Houwu descended from the other side.
At this moment, both men were carrying long, cloth-wrapped bundles. Judging by their shapes, they did not resemble firearms; rather, they looked like cold weapons.
After stepping out of the vehicle, Lin Bei scanned his surroundings and frowned slightly upon discovering so many onlookers gathered to watch the spectacle.
If there truly were supernatural entities inside, once a fight broke out, these people would likely become hostages.
Lin Bei called Wang Jianguo over, gave him a few whispered instructions, and then stepped forward to move ahead.
At that moment, a taxi pulled up in front of Lin Bei and his group, and a sturdily built middle-aged man stepped out of the vehicle.
The man had a square face, though his complexion was somewhat pale, and he coughed repeatedly from time to time, as if he were suffering from an illness.
Slung across his back was a massive wooden box.
Seeing him head toward the entrance of the Fan's Building, Lin Bei immediately followed, with Feng Yuxiu and the others close behind.
However, the middle-aged man was stopped right at the police cordon.
"Officer, there is a very high likelihood that a cat demon is running amok inside. Only I am capable of dealing with it. Please let me go inside and take a look. If it turns out not to be the case, I promise to come right back out!"
"Are you out of your mind? You're already getting up there in age—watch fewer trashy movies. Where on earth in this world are there so many demons and ghosts? Hurry up and leave, or I'll charge you with obstructing a police officer in the line of duty!"
The police officer addressed completely disbelieved the middle-aged man's words and waved him away impatiently, trying to chase him off.
Hearing their conversation, Lin Bei's expression instantly darkened.
He strode forward, bypassing the middle-aged man entirely, and directly asked the guarding officer, "Officer, one of the deceased inside is my employee. I've already spoken with your commander beforehand. Would it be convenient to let me go inside and take a look?"
Upon seeing that the person approaching was Lin Bei, the impatience instantly vanished from the officer's face.
This was Hong Kong's youngest billionaire, and the donations he made to their police force every single year were an astronomical sum. It was no exaggeration to say that everyone in the entire police force had benefited from his generosity.
Under such circumstances, he naturally had no way of putting on a stern face toward Lin Bei.
"Hello, Mr. Lin. It is fine to let you in, but I need to report this to my superiors first."
Lin Bei nodded. Since the man wasn't actively blocking him, he naturally wouldn't make things difficult for him.
After the officer spoke a few words into his walkie-talkie, instructions granting permission were quickly relayed from the other end.
He hurriedly untied the warning tape and cleared the way for Lin Bei.
Lin Bei first expressed his gratitude to the officer, then turned to the middle-aged man and said, "You come along as well!"
The middle-aged man was momentarily stunned by these words. After hesitating for a brief second, he quickly hurried forward.
The police officer who had just blocked him turned a blind eye to this.
Since Lin Bei himself had spoken up, how could the officer dare to stop him?
After crossing the cordon, Lin Bei caught the scent of an increasingly heavy smell of blood, causing him to instinctively frown.
Wang Jianguo had returned from the battlefield and was far more sensitive to the smell of blood than Lin Bei. He leaned close to Lin Bei's ear and whispered, "Boss, something is wrong with this place. The smell of blood is far too thick; I'm afraid a lot of people have died."
Lin Bei nodded and said, "Stay highly alert. If the situation turns sour, immediately call and notify Uncle Kau and the others!"
"Understood!"
Lin Bei then looked at the middle-aged man and asked, "I haven't had the pleasure of asking your name."
The middle-aged man flashed a stiff smile and replied, "Hello, Mr. Lin. My name is Cheung Tai-siu, and my daughter is Cheung Siu-chuen. She is an employee under your command."
Lin Bei had already felt a sense of surprise upon hearing that the middle-aged man in front of him was named Cheung Tai-siu.
Learning that his daughter turned out to be one of his own subordinates made him even more astonished.
"Then I suppose we can be considered family."
"Indeed!"
Seeing that Lin Bei seemed quite easy to talk to, Cheung Tai-siu relaxed considerably.
Yet, thinking of the grim situation inside, Cheung Tai-siu hesitated and said, "Mr. Lin, there might be some unusual, unclean entities inside. For your own safety, I suggest it would be best for you not to go over there."
Lin Bei raised an eyebrow and asked, "Are you referring to a cat demon?"
Hearing this, Cheung Tai-siu was momentarily taken aback. "You know about cat demons?"
Lin Bei nodded. "I've heard a few rumors. If there truly is a cat demon running amok, then all the more reason for me to make this trip."
"But..."
Cheung Tai-siu still wanted to dissuade him, but Lin Bei had already taken the Sword of Zhong Kui from Feng Yuxiu's hands.
*Clang~*
As the treasured sword was drawn from its scabbard, the exorcism energy radiating from it condensed into near-tangible sword qi.
Cheung Tai-siu swallowed hard involuntarily. He had originally thought that his family's ancestral bamboo bow and talisman arrows were rare and peerless sacred instruments of exorcism in this era, but he hadn't expected the nameless sword in Lin Bei's hand to be entirely uninferior to them.
