Hearing this, the Skinning Ghost realized that today was her day of reckoning and gave up hovering in midair. With a leap, she landed on the ground and began to play the sympathy card. “Three young gentlemen, to be honest, I was a miserable soul in life. When I was fifteen, I was abducted and sold to a brothel.”

Xu Tian and the rest turned their heads toward the Skinning Ghost, all smiling gently at her.

She continued, “I was furious—furious at the one who sold me to that brothel. One afternoon, the madam sent me to receive a customer. When I saw him, I realized who he was—the man who had abducted me.”

“At that time, I was already twenty-eight and looked completely different. Of course, he didn’t recognize me. That night, I went to the kitchen, took a knife, and skinned him alive, all over. I even cut off his private parts and fed them to the brothel’s dogs.”

Upon hearing this, the three of us were stunned, curious about what happened next. Li Kun asked, “What happened afterward? Were you caught?”

The Skinning Ghost shook her head. “No. I took his corpse to the woods. Before dawn, animals had devoured it. I thought no one knew what happened. But the madam had seen that man that day. When the county officials learned of the thief’s death, they came to the brothel to arrest someone. The madam pointed her finger at me and accused me.”

“But the madam had no proof and hadn’t witnessed the deed. The officials couldn’t act on mere words, so they released me. After that, no customers came to me. I wasn’t even allowed to eat, and the madam forced me to serve clients to the death.”

“I couldn’t accept that. Later, I skinned the madam alive as well. But that night, a girl named Xiao Ru from the brothel saw me. I wanted to kill her to keep the secret, but I was too weak from hunger and couldn’t catch her, so she escaped.”

Li Kun asked, “And then she reported you to the authorities?”

The Skinning Ghost nodded. “Exactly. I was sentenced to death by beheading, which would have been better. But the madam’s goddaughter bribed the officials heavily to ensure I wouldn’t die quickly. Instead, they executed me with the punishment of skinning and bone-breaking.”

Hearing all this, the three of us exchanged glances. Calling the Skinning Ghost a tragic figure wasn’t wrong, but her mind was clearly disturbed, and much of it related to the women in the brothel.

Li Kun sighed after listening. “Life drove her mad and then to death.”

The Skinning Ghost said, “Since death, I’ve been trapped on that mountain until now. When I escaped, I wanted revenge—cut Xiao Ru to pieces. But the world I emerged into is like this now.”

Hearing this, Xu Tian, Li Kun, and I all froze. I asked, “Are you saying you were trapped here?”

She nodded. “Yes. If I hadn’t been trapped here, I would have killed Xiao Ru long ago, scattering her soul.”

Xu Tian turned to me. “So this Goutou Village isn’t so simple. If the Skinning Ghost is trapped here, then I guess the Headless Ghost is trapped here too.”

I nodded. “That’s likely. Otherwise, such fierce spirits rarely appear. Two in one small village? The odds are nearly impossible.”

The Skinning Ghost pleaded, “Master, please release me just this once. I promise I won’t harm anyone again.”

I shook my head. “You’ve already killed nine people—innocents, all young women with their whole lives ahead of them, who deserved to see the world. Because of you, they died. Do you think I can let you go?”

After I finished speaking, the Skinning Ghost grit her teeth and suddenly screamed, wild madness in her eyes. She growled fiercely, “Do you think I have no way to break free?”

The moment she finished, she threw her head back and howled. Her hair stood on end, and a fierce black ghostly aura burst forth from her body. Then, astonishingly, the aura was drawn into her mouth, and in the blink of an eye, her body swelled several sizes.

The rotted flesh on her belly began to burst open, and her head slowly expanded.

Xu Tian and I snapped to attention. I shouted, “Damn it! This ghost is about to self-destruct!”

Before I finished, the Skinning Ghost shouted midair, “I’m not going to live through today anyway. If that’s the case, you and everyone left in this village will die with me. We will all perish together.”

Then, unable to bear the agony of her ghostly form, she shrieked wildly.

Seeing this, Xu Tian and I turned to Li Kun. I said, “Old Li, quickly use Blood Eyes to kill her! Otherwise, she’ll blow us and the village to smithereens!”

Hearing me, Li Kun snapped out of it, closed his eyes, and soon a chill swept through the surroundings. Then he suddenly opened his eyes wide.

Li Kun’s eyes were blood-red, fixed intently on the Skinning Ghost above. Black death energy flickered at the corners of his eyes. At that moment, the Skinning Ghost caught sight of his bloodshot gaze.

Startled, she screamed, “That’s... a ghost—”

Before she could finish, two black beams shot straight toward her chest. We heard two muffled pops and all looked up, eyes locked on the Skinning Ghost.

Her chest was pierced through by the two beams, and through the holes, the full moon above was visible.

The Skinning Ghost groaned, staring fiercely at Li Kun’s eyes but was speechless now. Bathed in the pale moonlight, her ghostly form gradually dissipated into the air and earth. With that, she was utterly destroyed, leaving no trace behind.

After witnessing her complete disappearance, the three of us exhaled deeply. Xu Tian said, “That scared me to death. I thought the three of us were done for tonight.”

He glanced at Li Kun, patted his shoulder, and said, “Old Li, you’re amazing. You killed that Skinning Ghost in one shot. Your Blood Eyes are really something.”

Li Kun chuckled, “It’s all thanks to Old Liu opening my Heavenly Eye. Without him, I wouldn’t have...”

Before he could finish, Li Kun’s body trembled and with a thud, he collapsed unconscious.

Xu Tian and I were at a loss. Li Kun had been fine just moments ago—why did he suddenly faint?

We quickly helped him up. I patted his chest, “Old Li, Old Li?”

Li Kun showed no movement. Just as I was about to check his breath, I heard a sudden snore from him. Soft, rhythmic snores filled Xu Tian’s and my ears.

Hearing that, Xu Tian and I both twitched at the corners of our mouths and exchanged a helpless smile. I said, “Looks like even Blood Eyes can’t be used continuously.”

Xu Tian nodded. “Anyway, the Skinning Ghost is dead. Nothing major will happen tonight. Let’s get some rest. The villagers will probably come early tomorrow morning to check on us. Tonight, let’s all sleep in the main room on the heated kang. The big bed in the side room won’t do.”

I nodded, and with Xu Tian, we helped Li Kun to his feet and slowly entered the main room.

At the other end of the kang, several thick quilts were piled high. We grabbed three quilts and spread them on the kang. Since it’s winter, and the northeastern kang needs to be heated, otherwise it’s as cold as the floor.

Xu Tian and I smiled ruefully. Tonight, we would have to sleep wearing thick clothes under the quilts.

I was fine with it, but Xu Tian, who had never slept on a kang before, would likely find it uncomfortable.

The night was very quiet except for Li Kun’s unusually loud snoring. Maybe when people are exhausted, their snoring becomes especially outlandish.

We all slept soundly. It wasn’t until dawn that the knocking came from outside.

Xu Tian, a light sleeper, woke up, rubbed his sleepy eyes, glanced at Li Kun and me still asleep, then got up and went out.

The winter morning was bitterly cold, and the sky was thickly overcast, as if snow might fall.

Xu Tian tightened his clothes, pulled the bolt, and slowly opened the wooden door.

Outside stood the elderly village chief leaning on a cane. Behind him was the large dog we had seen yesterday.

The dog smiled at Xu Tian and pointed at the old village chief, covering its mouth and mouthing something silently. Xu Tian looked carefully and saw it making motions as if eating breakfast.

Xu Tian nodded to the dog and said, “Village Chief, please come in and talk.”
