I paid him no heed and continued chanting the incantation. For one thing, I did not trust the bastard. More importantly, Old Man Ma was my master. There was no reason for me to let this man go merely to uncover his secrets.

Old Man Ma might be lecherous and shameless in his everyday life, but he had always known right from wrong. If he wanted me to know something, he would tell me sooner or later. If he did not, then he surely had his reasons.

“Ah—”

Yun Mutian let out a thunderous scream. Overcome with agony, he collapsed to the ground, his limbs twisted grotesquely, his face flushed crimson with pain.

He had brought this upon himself. Did he really think I would keep taking his attacks without fighting back? That brat had tried to harm me time and again. He could hardly blame me for being ruthless now.

I walked toward him. “My master once told me that, when dealing with evil spirits and wicked practitioners, all you need to do is seal their souls and suppress their cultivation. After that, they can no longer cause trouble.”

Of course, that was not entirely true. My abilities were limited, and the effect I could produce was not especially strong. With Third Master Guo’s skill, it would be easy enough to undo the seal for him. But until then, the bastard would be reduced to his original form.

“No! Please… please, don’t!” he shouted in panic. “You… you must have seen it, right? When Old Ma sleeps, he’s as still as a corpse. Sometimes it even looks as though he’s suddenly died. He has… cough, cough… no breathing, no heartbeat!”

I could not help stopping in my tracks. How did this fellow know that?

Whenever Old Man Ma slept, his body lay rigid and motionless, without the slightest sound. And back in the forest of vines, he had indeed behaved strangely—just like a dead man.

Seeing that I had stopped, Yun Mutian continued, “You… you’re wondering how I know. You should understand that my master, Third Master Guo—cough, cough—once belonged to the same lineage as Old Ma. He… he told me all of this. Old Ma should have ceased to exist in this world long ago.”

“What did you say?”

What did he mean, saying that Old Man Ma should not exist? Was he implying that my master ought to have died already? He was clearly alive and well!

“Don’t you find it strange? In terms of seniority, my master is still Old Ma’s grand-disciple. You’ve seen my master’s age yourself. If Old Ma is two generations above him, then how old would that make him? Even if a person truly lived to an extraordinary age, there’s no way he could still be this vigorous!”

“What exactly are you trying to say?” I demanded angrily.

“You still don’t understand? Old Ma should have died long ago! He isn’t a normal human being!” he said with difficulty.

“Stop slandering my master, you bastard! Do you think I’ll let you go just because you spew a few filthy lies?” I shouted furiously.

“Whether I’m slandering him or not, don’t you, as his disciple, know the truth in your heart? You should know about the Ghost Crone. They cling to the world with their last breath, yet they’re no longer truly human. But a Ghost Crone isn’t necessarily a ‘crone.’ In truth, Old Ma—”

“Luozi! Are you all right?” Old Man Ma’s voice suddenly came from behind.

I looked up and saw several phone lights shining in the distance as a group of people hurried toward us.

They had all come down.

I could not help looking toward Old Man Ma after hearing what Yun Mutian had said. Whether that bastard was telling the truth or not, his words had undeniably shaken me. Every one of them had struck directly at the doubts I had been carrying.

“Watch out!” Tu'e suddenly shouted.

A dangerous sensation rushed toward me. I instinctively bent down and dodged as a cloud of white powder scattered past my side.

Dragging my injured leg, I quickly retreated to one side and turned around. That bastard Yun Mutian had actually broken free of my restraint!

He glared at me viciously, his face blazing with mad fury. He flung both hands toward me, sending the powder flying, and let out a hateful, twisted laugh.

“You were bewitched by just a few words! A piece of trash will always be trash! Hahaha! You wanted to seal my soul? You wanted to torment me? Then I’ll make sure you stay down here for the rest of your life!”

White powder filled the air around us. I held my breath and continued retreating, dragging my injured leg behind me.

The man looked utterly deranged. He pressed closer and closer, laughing sinisterly.

Some of the white powder landed on my arm. The flesh began to sting as though it were being scorched by fire. I hissed in pain.

“Don’t push it too far, boy!” Old Man Ma roared angrily.

The group came running toward us.

Third Master Guo shouted coldly, “Yun Mutian! Stop at once! Something is wrong with that place!”

But the bastard could no longer hear anyone. He had completely lost his mind. Laughing viciously, he kept swinging his arms and scattering powder at me.

I had already retreated a considerable distance. Any farther, and I would reach the place where that woman had been earlier.

“Hahahaha!”

The bastard laughed wildly and lunged at me, moving no less ferociously than those corpses that had been possessed.

I silently recited the incantation and struggled to move my leg, which had been bitten by the two-headed serpent, then dodged toward the side.

Yun Mutian was struck by my spell and suddenly froze. Having charged forward at full speed, he was carried on by his own momentum and pitched headlong into the darkness.

A dim, greenish-blue glow suddenly appeared within the darkness. A gigantic serpent’s head thrust out from it and sank its fangs into Yun Mutian!

Before I could even understand what was happening, Yun Mutian began screaming as though his heart were being torn apart. The agony was far worse than anything I had inflicted on him earlier.

“Mutian!” Third Master Guo shouted.

No matter how deserving that bastard was of death, I had never intended for him to die right then and there. I took out the black dog blood and prepared to go forward to help him.

“Don’t go!” Tu'e suddenly shouted.

I stopped abruptly—not because of his warning, but because I sensed two dense waves of yin energy rushing toward us.

Without the slightest hesitation, I retreated and hurled the black dog blood from my hand.

Two serpent heads suddenly emerged from the darkness. One of them bit down on the bottle of black dog blood, shattering it. The blood splashed across the ground and drenched its entire mouth.

“Cough, cough… cough…”

A familiar coughing sound rang out.

I shuddered violently and stared at the serpent head covered in black dog blood. The coughing I heard every night had actually been coming from this thing!

Looking more closely at the dim, greenish-blue glow around the head that was shaking Yun Mutian, I realized it was identical to the glow that moved through the mountain forest every night.

Could this be the thing that had been moving through the woods each night?

In other words, it could come out!

I hurriedly retreated as Third Master Guo rushed forward. He waved both hands and fired something toward the serpent head that had Yun Mutian in its jaws.

Yun Mutian had already stopped screaming. His entire body hung limp and motionless, allowing the serpent to bite him. He was clearly dead.

The serpent head was struck by whatever Third Master Guo had fired, but it showed no reaction whatsoever. Instead, the other two serpent heads opened their mouths and thrust toward him.

“It’s useless! That boy is already dead. This thing is profoundly evil—your poison won’t work on it!” Old Man Ma shouted.

Third Master Guo gritted his teeth and tried again. The serpent head seemed to have been angered. With a sudden jerk, it flung Yun Mutian’s corpse into the darkness, then opened its jaws and lunged at Third Master Guo.
