Chapter 111: Spirit Writing
I looked at Tuo’e and asked, “What’s going on with her?”
“She’s possessed by a ghost,” he replied.
“But didn’t you say there are no ghosts in the school?” Previously, he mentioned sensing ghostly energy but insisted there were no ghosts. Now he says she’s possessed. Had he simply made a mistake by not summoning the ghost before?
He explained, “There really are no ghosts in the school. She’s truly possessed, but the ghost was summoned by herself, not from within the school.”
In other words, the ghost clinging to Su Yi was called forth by her from outside the school, which is why he couldn’t summon any ghost on campus. But why would Su Yi summon a ghost to harm herself? Could it be, like with Zheng Xiao before, that something triggered this?
“If she’s possessed, why hasn’t she shown any signs? She acts normally, and even you didn’t notice anything,” I asked.
Xiao Qingwan said, “There are many types of possession, and the manifestations vary. If the ghost was summoned through a ritual she performed herself, usually only the person involved knows. It’s hard for others to detect.”
A ritual she performed herself...
“Could it be a game of Ouija?”
Xiao Qingwan shook her head. “That’s uncertain. There are many ways to summon ghosts. With so little information, only she knows.”
I turned to Tuo’e. “What’s her current condition? When will she wake up?”
“I’ve suppressed her soul for now. She just needs to sleep it off,” Tuo’e said.
I asked again, “If the ghost was summoned through a ritual, how do we get rid of it?”
Xiao Qingwan replied, “First, find out who participated in the ritual and gather them. Then summon the possessing ghost, either negotiate with it or drive it away.”
Just like how Old Chen saved Xiao Chao before.
It seems we have to wait for Su Yi to wake before we can start. Why did she summon the ghost? How are the people whose souls were sealed connected to her? We can only ask once she’s awake.
The next day, Su Yi woke, sobbing uncontrollably, hugging herself, trembling all over, her expression anxious and terrified.
The questions I had prepared were suddenly difficult to voice. Xiao Qingwan comforted her.
Once she calmed down a bit, I said, “Su Yi, be honest with us. Did you play with the Ouija board?”
At those words, she shuddered, eyes full of terror.
Just as I suspected. “Last night, another person from English Class One jumped off a building. You’d better explain everything clearly, or we can’t help you.”
Su Yi cried harder, clearly frightened. Sniffling, she said, “No... it wasn’t Ouija. It was Fuji.”
Fuji! My goodness, nowadays Ouija boards aren’t enough to satisfy their curiosity—they’re playing with ancient rituals!
Fuji originated from the practice of spirit writing, a simplified evolution of it. Methods vary by region but generally involve preparing a wooden tray with fine sand, inserting a pen or bamboo stick, and two people holding each end while burning incense and talismans to invite spirits.
These ancient things sound ominous; I don’t understand their mindset—are they playing just for fun?
“Who all participated?” I asked.
“There was me, plus Cen Yuliang, Mou Xiaobin, Song Yunyun from our class, Qiao Jiang from Chemical Engineering, and Park Mao from Physical Education...” she said.
Six in total; two are already dead. Who will be next?
I took out a list and said, “Here’s a list. See if you recognize these names.”
This list contained the students who suddenly fell ill, which I had copied last night.
Su Yi looked over it, thought for a moment, then her expression changed sharply. Her gaze flickered nervously as she said, “Some I know, some I don’t. Why are you asking?”
“This is the list of students who suddenly fell ill over the past month. Our investigation shows they weren’t simply sick—they were cursed with soul-sealing witchcraft,” I said. Her reaction clearly indicated she knew something.
Startled, Su Yi’s body trembled violently. She could barely hold the list, her voice trembling: “Soul... soul-sealing witchcraft... It’s not my fault. This has nothing to do with me, really, nothing…”
Xiao Qingwan comforted her: “Don’t be afraid. Tell us, and we’ll help you. What connection do these people have?”
Su Yi seemed deeply reluctant to speak, clutching Xiao Qingwan tightly, tears streaming as she murmured, “This really isn’t my fault, it has nothing to do with me, I…”
Before she could finish, she suddenly went limp and collapsed back onto the bed.
I was alarmed and rushed to check her. She was weak, eyes vacant, looking thoroughly ill. Her soul had been sealed! How did this happen? How did she get caught in the curse too?
Xiao Qingwan was shocked—this was her first time seeing something like this.
Tuo’e placed a hand on Su Yi’s forehead and said, “Her soul has left her body.”
Now that even Su Yi’s soul was sealed, this matter clearly involves more than just her—it concerns this entire group, and perhaps even more people!
Poor Su Yi: first, she summoned a ghost through Fuji that harmed her, and now she’s been cursed with soul-sealing witchcraft.
I asked, “Su Yi, what exactly happened? What did you do?”
With tear-filled, blurry eyes, she weakly said, “There’s... there’s one more... Gao Sheng...”
After that, she couldn’t say anything more.
Gao Sheng! He’s involved too.
Lord Wei suddenly stood and instructed Su Feiyong, “Investigate thoroughly what they did.”
“Yes, sir.”
With that, Lord Wei headed outside, Su Feiyong following closely.
“Lord, where are you going?” Xiao Qingwan called after him.
I stopped her and said, “He’s probably going to find Gao Sheng. Let’s handle the immediate matter first.”
Xiao Qingwan hesitated, murmuring unhappily, “It’s always like this—first you, now this Gao Sheng. Why does it always happen this way?”
I couldn’t help but smile wryly.
Looking at the feeble Su Yi, cursed and possessed, the soul-sealing might be temporary, but if the ghost possession isn’t dealt with, it will be troublesome. And since Su Yi can’t be moved now, the best place for her is to stay in this hotel—if only the owner agrees.
Suddenly, my phone chimed with a message. I checked it: “The hotel is fully booked for you. Stay as long as you like. —Su Feiyong.”
It seems Lord Wei knows what he’s doing. With this, things become much easier to manage.
